"Pray for a delay" campaign targets mobile users on UK railway service

The marketing and advertising publication The Drum reports that PokerStars is targeting consumers with an outdoor advertising campaign to promote its new mobile app, targeting the 5.3 million railway passengers on the UK's Southern Railway network over a four-week period.

With a "Pray for a Delay" strapline, the ads are specifically designed to appeal to commuters looking for something constructive to do on their daily journey to work. Research has shown that four in five (83 percent) frequent rail users access the internet at least once per day and they are twice as likely to own a smartphone.

PokerStars is keen to capitalise on this to engage with passengers and drive them to the free app, which lets people play poker for real money on-the-go.

Train advertising provides a positive captive environment, with the average commuter spending 22 minutes within the train carriage, allowing them to absorb and interact with the advertising message and download the Pokerstars App to their mobile phone or tablet, explained Mark Dolan from Transport Media.

Pokerstars has also launched its real money iOS and Android mobile app in the Asia Pacific region, renowned for the popularity of gambling.

Players in Australia and New Zealand are included in the Asian initiative, which takes advantage of the widespread use of smart phones and tablets in the region. The new app also embraces Zoom - the company's phenomenally successful speed poker product.
